Womb & Voice

~ Words about the connection between our voice & our womb and how to work with this to ease pain ~

ree

The more I am learning to use my voice, the more I realize how deeply connected the womb and the throat are, and what an incredible instrument our voice is in order to give voice to/release pain. After years of working with my cycle, I found that what helps soften my menstruation pain most, is making very weird, loud, probably not so very beautiful sounds. I just let whatever I feel be translated into sound and the longer I do this, the more release I feel. The pain eases and often completely disappears.

The first time I did (or had to do) this, I was experiencing such severe pains that I called my best friend in panic, and she said.. just make whatever sound you need to make in order to let it out. Letting my voice out was not an easy thing for me, like it isn’t for so many of us. Especially for those who tend to stay quiet, who have learned to not be too much, letting yourself making (loud) sounds can be quite challenging, especially if you let your voice guide you (which means you won't know how your voice wants to be expressed, and you need to let go of control). But I had no choice, and it helped!

After that I started doing this more and more, also to give space to other feelings I was (and am) experiencing. For example, in my last newsletter I wrote about grief. If you would ask yourself, with an emotion that needs attention; how would I give voice to this? How does this (want to) sound? How can I express myself now? It doesn’t need to sound pretty and no one needs to hear it, but letting yourself express feelings of grief, sadness, joy, anger or for example excitement can really shift your energy in a very short time.

I started really small and with very soft sounds, because this was scary to me. And I’m still very much learning to open up and expand, especially when other people are around. But I have really found that, if you can start with little sounds and then slowly get more comfortable with using your voice as an instrument, as a tool - this is so helpful and liberating.

For those with a cycle /period; voice expression is amazing for easing the pain, even humming can help if anything else is too much for you. If not, I would absolutely recommend you to try this and let yourself be as loud as you can or dare to be. It does not matter what comes out and how it sounds.

Singing actual songs can work magic too; last week we held our singing circle and I went there with huge cramps because it was the first day of my bleed. I thought I would maybe not be able to do it at all, but after a few songs I started to feel that I was singing through the pain, it just got less and less. After the circle I was tired, but my cramps were completely gone. This made me realize (again) how deeply healing using our voice can be and why I'm walking this path, as working with voice + sound can heal our whole body 💛

Our next singing circle will take place on 28/11, which still takes a little while, but in the meantime I still have cyclic sessions available. In these sessions we can also create a space to explore working with the voice to help you move through painful periods (this can also help so much in other areas of your life as well).

I hope you're enjoying the (first signs of) autumn and are able to soften and slow down, just like nature does.
