So many of us have been taught that menstruation is something we shouldn't talk about, that it's inconvenient, annoying, even shameful, maybe. And so this is the attitude many people hold towards the monthly blood - man as well as women. Of course this is not the truth; beneath all the layers of judgement and shame that we've built up around this theme as a society, the true gift of menstruation is awaiting us.
Our womb gives the amazing opportunity to release each month. She gives us the opportunity to let go of that which no longer serves us, to let go of old pain, waste and clutter, all through our blood.
In order to allow for this magic to happen, we need to let go of the outer world for a little bit - instead we need to go in conversation with our wombs and our blood. This might sound intense if you're not used to it, by if we consciously take the time to connect to instead of shame our periods, we will find the deeper wisdom that it holds.
I've written before about the multiple ways we can connect to our blood, and in this article I'll focus on one of the practices that I have found to be the most powerful;
The first time I allowed myself to let my blood run free, it felt as if I could feel the tears of women streaming down my legs. The tears of the women who weren't allowed to show their blood, who had to hide it, shame it. Red tears, releasing the pain around women having to suppress their deep inner wisdom and power.
There is something incredibly powerful about allowing yourself to let your blood run free. It has helped me (and is helping me) to access a deep deep rage, a deep grief, and also connected me to my deep wom(b)n power. Going through this process can be challenging, but I deeply believe that we don't only do it for ourselves. When we have the courage to walk this path, we do it for all women, because this wound is collective, it is the pain that all women carry.
When one woman heals, she heals for all.
Healing is nothing but letting it be there, it is not fixing, it is letting the blood flow and feeling the pain that comes with it. By allowing your blood to be visible again, by allowing it to freely touch the earth, one the one hand you will feel the freedom that comes with that - on the other hand you'll feel the pain of not having been able to do it for so long. For years, for centuries; you will feel the pain of the generations that came before you, of the women of your lineage, who had to hide their blood. You might feel the rage of your ancestors, of your womb, of your sisters, of all the lives in which you were oppressed and restricted in showing your true power as a woman. Even now, in our modern society, we're being told that we need to hide our periods, that we need to act as if nothing is up, while we're bleeding. We're bleeding.
We (at least I) learned to push through my bleeding days, even when I was in great pain. I learned to hide my blood, to throw it in the bin, to ignore it and to wish it away. To not tell anyone, to not show anyone. To toughen up. Turning this belief around and reclaiming our womb space requires strength, effort and compassion, but is so deeply healing. By allowing ourselves to feel all of this and to let your monthly blood flow freely, we give our womb the opportunity to release the pain and anger that she's still holding - by feeling and releasing it we can create space for great power, joy and abundance in our lives.
Your monthly bleed is an invitation from your body to make contact to your deepest waters, to your deepest wounds, to your deepest wishes and pleasures. It is an invitation to let go of that which no longer serves you, in order for you to start living your best life. If you listen, it is actually talking to you. This natural cleansing process of the body is one that I am deeply thankful for each month. My cycle is my most powerful tool, my deepest spiritual practice, and I wish this for all of you of you who carry a womb ♡
My online workshop about Cyclic Living & the Menstruation cycle (in dutch) is now available here and if you want to start connecting to your womb on a deeper level, you can find a meditation to help you here.
